El Salvador’s Nuclear Energy Program
El Salvador is making strides towards energy independence and sustainability with its New Nuclear Energy Law, passed in July 2024. This groundbreaking initiative includes plans to establish the nation’s first research reactor by 2030. By creating the Organization for the Implementation of the Nuclear Energy Program (OIPEN), the government aims to integrate nuclear energy into its energy mix, focusing on electricity generation, industrial applications, and research. The program also explores medical and agricultural uses of nuclear by-products.
Under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador is actively collaborating with international partners such as Argentina, the United States, Spain, and South Korea. The initiative complies with IAEA safety protocols and includes a robust training agenda to produce 400 nuclear professionals over seven years.
This program is a pivotal move to diversify El Salvador’s energy matrix, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and lower carbon emissions, all while fostering technological advancement and innovation. While challenges such as high upfront costs, public skepticism, and environmental concerns persist, the government is prioritizing public engagement, safety protocols, and potential investment in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to mitigate risks and enhance scalability.
